MMA Champ Was Arrested

According to TMZ, another MMA champ was arrested recently in Birmingham, New York.

This time a fighter was taken in by authorities for driving his fancy-pants car under influence and crashing it. Or to be more precise … at the time of writing this, it’s really a suspicion of DUI.

I find it kind of sad that Jon “Bones” Jones, a well respected UFC Light Heavyweight champion, appears to have fallen from graze in what really is a stupid and totally unnecessary fashion. Continue reading

Uneducated Martial Arts Reporters

It may appear to be quite a number of seemingly uneducated martial arts reporters lurking around out there on the vast internet thingy.

This is something we have covered previously – for instance in this post about youngsters being called masters as soon as they have been handed a black belt.

The level of knowledge – or rather the lack thereof – is something we probably will have to live with as far as regular reporters writing about issues related to the fighting arts goes. Continue reading

Ninja Everywhere

Ninja everywhere

There’s apparently ninja everywhere to be found – at least if you we’re to judge by the amount of ninjas popping up in media reports.

By some strange design, (what appears to be otherwise) well educated, sober, reasonable and rationale individuals find it OK to stick the cartoon-like ninja tag to anything and everything.

The end result being ninja robbers, ninja programmers and what have you not.

Don’t know about you but speaking for myself – if anyone had suggested I’d have to add ninja to my work title, I’d probably go mental. And I’d definitely seek work elsewhere. Continue reading

An arrest extension for a Russian MMA fighter has been requested by police after a tragic incident which occurred back in 2011.

The 25-year-old mixed martial arts fighter – originally from Dagestan – reportedly killed a teenage student in August 2011.

Rasul Mirzayev, who goes under the fighter name of “Black Tiger”, turned himself in to Moscow police six days after he allegedly punched and killed the young victim following a brief and heated argument near the entrance to a nightclub on Pushkin Square. Continue reading

Amazing Judo Escape

Amazing judo escape

The kind of amazing judo escape we’re referring to here is perhaps not the one you’d be most likely to think of – like getting out of a solid judo hold or performing a great judo throw counter.

That said, there are a couple of those kind of escapes we wouldn’t hesitate to put an amazing tag on.

This time we’re talking about an other form of escape – running from your home country and people who apparently out to get you.

We encourage you to read about the truly extraordinary story about Cuban national judo team star Geanny Hernandez Quiala and all the judoka had to endure in order to escape to the U.S. Continue reading

Using Martial Arts As Self-Defense

Using martial arts as self-defense

If you know where to look, you will find quite a number of reports about people young and old using martial arts as self-defense.

You can find these instances of men and women, boys and girls fighting back as videos posted on YouTube (example found below), as online forum posts and also in the form of the occasional news brief.

Even though there is always a possibility that some of these reports may be nothing more than fairy tales by someone trying to come across as tough, there’s still a fair amount of reputable instances to go around. Continue reading

Nun Fu

If you should happen to wonder what ‘nun fu‘ is, then allow me to explain. It’s nothing more than my feeble attempt on humor, by mixing real Buddhist nuns doing kung fu into one silly term (I know … I’m an idiot :)

In any case, I would say it’s about time that nuns get the same opportunity to study martial arts as their male counterparts, the monks.

Hopefully, this is a sign that changes going on in the society at large – with gender equality slowly but surely coming along even in traditionally male dominated cultures – is also seeping into places like century old institutions like monasteries. Continue reading

Martial Arts For Older Adults

Martial arts for older adults

Is martial arts for older adults also – not just kids and younger people with lots of energy to burn? Strange question, you say?

To anyone familiar with the fighting arts, this may indeed appear to be an odd thing to ask about.

However, this is actually a rather common question – or should I say worry – that we get from time to time: Am I too old to take up a martial art without making a fool of myself or risk getting injured? Or phrased like this: Martial arts is something that only young people do, right? Bad Martial Arts Instructors

Bad martial arts instructors

Matt Fiddes - courtesy of Wikipedia.org

Truth be told: In my time, I’ve had my encounters with bad martial arts instructors … along with a huge number of really great ones too, of course.

While the vast majority of instructors and coaches within the fighting arts are hard working, dedicated professionals and decent people, you also have the occasional ones that are way less than that – some even way below the set standards of being a good person and a great teacher of martial arts.

Without knowing all the details of the individual discussed below, it is fair to say that we have someone who apparently does his best to give the combative arts a bad rep. Continue reading
